Over the years, Ludington has been recognized for its State Park, beaches, and lighthouses. Now it can add another distinction--as part of the very first History Prize in 2017.

Ludington was originally chosen to be the venue for History Prize, but in February 2015, the Ludington History Prize Board of Directors decided to withdraw from hosting History Prize, citing the enormous cost to bringing the event to town and some concern over the ownership of the name. It will now take place in various communities along the lakeshore, from St. Joseph up to Frankfort.

History Prize is relatively new, and similar to Art Prize in Grand Rapids. It will span 11 days in June 2017 and cover history, culture and heritage. People from all over the country will conduct re-enactments and bring historical exhibits--all to compete for $150,000 in prize money.

Participants will be judged in three categories:
Fixed Exhibits
Historical Collections
Living History

Prize amounts to be awarded:
1st Prize-$30,000
2nd Prize-$15,000
3rd Prize-$ 5,000

Many communities were considered to host History Prize, including Ludington, Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Holland, Detroit and Bay City. Ludington was considered for its "location to big water, proximity to large cities and a good understanding of cultural tourism."

Ludington truly embraces its history, including its maritime heritage, the the S.S. Badger Carferry, and Historic White Pine Village. Just recently, a series of self-guided driving routes with narration came to completion called the Mason County Cultural Trail. This five-part trail is comprised of the Mason County Barn Quilt Trail, the Lumber Heritage Trail, the Mason County Sculpture Trail and the Mason County Agricultural Trail. Add Scottville's Western Michigan Old Engine Club, and the future Port of Ludington Maritime Museum and you've got a community that works hard at preserving its history. The committee felt that Ludington is authentic and encompasses history in every part of its fiber.
